Prof.(Dr.) Ravi Byahut, Head, Department of Radiotherapy
The first Department of Radiotherapy in India was opened on January 25, 1910 by the Countess of Minto at the Calcutta Medical College Hospital. It was during the British rule in 1913, when for the treatment purpose radioactive material in the form of Radium was brought to India at Ranchi, Bihar, by Col. Vaughan of Indian Medical Services (IMS) later in 1917; he published the work which was widely acclaimed. Then governor of Bihar Sir Edward Gaite directed the Director General, Health Services, to establish the Radium Institute, Ranchi, as he was greatly impressed by Col. Vaughan’s work.
There was establishment of at least four radium institutes in the four corners of the country. These included the Radium Institute in Patna, Radium Institute in Agra, Barnard Institute of Radiology in Madras and the Medical College of Lahore (now in Pakistan). The bulk stock of radium arrived at Ranchi (Bihar) and was then transported to the Radium Institute, Patna for clinical use. In 1928 Radium Institute was shifted from Ranchi to Prince of Wales College, Patna due to its easier accessibility to patients because of its central location, (The building of Radium Institute, Ranchi, on Radium Road is currently being used by the Indian Army, Eastern Command Garrison.)
The story is incomplete without mentioning the name of Maharaja of Darbhanga Mr. Kumar kameshwar Narayan Singh and his son, who donated a princely sum of Rs. 1,50,000/- for construction of new building for Radium Institute at Patna, which is still standing erect with all its glory, giving shelter to the radiotherapy department, PMCH and fulfilling the dreams of its founders of serving the masses and mainly those who are under privileged.
In 1966, Under the headship of Dr. Rangi Prasad Singh, first Teletherapy Cobalt Machine Unit (Theratron-60) was installed under the supervision of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. He nurtured the Prince of Wales Medical College based Radium Institute at Patna, from its nascent stage in the 60’s to its pride of place in the 80’s, as Professor and Head of the Deptt. of Radiotherapy, A Colombo Plan Fellow (U.K). President, AROI (Bihar Chapter), Vice President IRIA (Oncology). He was visiting Professor at the Howard University Hospital, Washington and National Institute of Health, Bethesda, USA. Intimately associated with several socio-philanthropic institutions.
In 1972, Department of Radiology was bifurcated and Department of Radiotherapy assumed its prime place under headship of Dr. A.D. Singh. Renovation and upgradation was done. Second Teletherapy Cobalt Unit (Alderado-8) was installed, along with Radium Needles and tubes, Superficial and Deep therapy Machines, Simulator for treatment planning, Mould Room, Gamma Scanner and therapy unit, Diagnostic X-ray machine both static and portable and radiation Survey Metre were acquired. A Contemporary state of the art cancer treatment centre was established and blossomed into its unique glory
In 1974, Under Patna University Post-Graduate Degree Course (M.D Radiotherapy) was started and students from all corners of India got the opportunity to take admission and to learn this technical course.
In the year 2000 procedures to procure a New Teletherapy Cobalt Machine was initiated under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Mithilesh Kumar. In January 2003 old Cobalt Machine Theratron-60 was Reconditioned and Inaugurated by Honourable Health Minister Dr Shakeel Ahmad.

The Department of Plastic Surgery was started in the year 1956 in Patna Medical College and Hospital. Initially, the Department was under the General Surgery Department as a separate unit headed by Prof. Dr. R.N.Sinha. Prof Sinha, fondly remembered as the Father of Plastic Surgery in Bihar –Jharkand, took all his efforts and later on started the Department as a separate department from General Surgery. Prof Sinha, later got trained under Sir Harold Gilles (Father of Modern Plastic Surgery) and Sir Gilles visited our department in early 1960’s and had operated few patients and even demonstrated many operative procedures for our resident doctors in 1964.
The Department during its inception was one of a kind in our nation along with its contemporary departments at Mumbai and Nagpur. Our department, later on in 1964 full-fledged as a post-graduation department. Our first trainees in the department were awarded M.S Plastic Surgery and their training started in 1961. First batch of our trainee plastic surgery residents were awarded the M.S Plastic Surgery degree in 1963. In 1964, after the Medical Council of India (MCI) inspection, M.S Plastic Surgery degree was recognized and entered in the schedule of MCI. Since the inception of our department, it has trained almost 150 plus resident doctors from all over the country
